Pingtank

Creative and Marketing Strategist

Pingtank is a social media application backed by Silicon Valley VC Tim Draper and Rapper/Influencer TYGA that was launched in March 2015. Pingtank’s platform, which enables users to put interactive animations over photos, is integrated with Facebook’s mobile messenger.

Pingtank has achieved 200,000+ Monthly Active Users, 350,000+ videos created per week, 3,000,000+ previews played in 30 days

Accomplishments

  • Created promotional videos for successful social media campaign resulting in millions of impressions across the web.

  • Filmed, edited, and produced successful Crowdfunder video which resulted in $1 Million in funding.

  • Coordinated user experience research and usability studies to evaluate animations and UX.

  • Using the collected data collaborated with engineering team to define the user model and user interface and user experience.

  • Developed marketing strategies and strategic partnerships for launch of app utilizing social media and PR.

User Experience
Pingtank’s mobile application was in desperate need of user experience help. The animation selection screen was confusing and difficult to navigate. This lack of organization was leading to poor retention and bad reviews.

Problem

  • Confusing icons and unclear navigation system lead to frustrated users.

  • Users didn’t recognize that icons were mapping to animation categories.

  • Too many animations in each category made it difficult for users to find what they were looking for.

  • With over 41 animations in each category, many animations were never seen because it required the user to scroll through too many pages.


Solution

  • Redesigned and simplified animation selection process by creating more categories with fewer animations in each.

  • This allowed the user to view and locate the animations more quickly and brought animations that had been buried to the forefront.

  • Added in “Search” option to help users find a specific animation.

  • Developed clean and clear menu for obvious selection of title categories.

  • Added heart icon for creating “favorites” category which allows users to save prefered animations.

  • Expand process to multiple screens.

Design Challenges: I was put in an interesting position while designing these screens. Our target demographic was 12 - 22 but we had just seen a large jump in users over 45. I was forced to think twice about the sizing of buttons and making sure everything that I designed was easily visible and understood by all ages.I also needed to make sure the design wasnt overall to young and playfull.
